It’s always been Donni Davy’s firm belief that you can wear glitter to the grocery store as you would to a music festival. This spirit is at the heart of the Euphoria makeup artist’s new makeup line, Half Magic, a collection of face gems, vivid eye paints, and iridescent highlighters out today. For Davy, the moniker has dual meanings. “The first one is makeup is half of the magic, and the person wearing the makeup is the other half,” Davy tells Vogue. “You are already incredibly unique and that’s enough, but these tools can help you explore different facets of who you are within your own personality.” The other aspect? “Bridging the gap between fantastical makeup and everyday life,” she says. “The Euphoria [aesthetic] has always existed, but not as accessibly to the mainstream, and that’s really at the heart of the brand—being unintimidating and inviting people to share the joy in using makeup in a fun, more expressive way.”

If ever there was fertile ground for color-washed gazes and gem-embellished cheekbones, it’s this summer’s spate of outdoor music festivals, from Glastonbury to Lollapalooza. “If something is intimidating, you don’t have to jump in all at once,” says Davy of navigating the glittering and Technicolor world of festival makeup. “You can start small and then you’ll see this sort of dopamine makeup effect. It’s a mood lifter and you’ll be inspired to experiment more!” From perfecting luminous yet sweat-proof skin to embracing graphic eyes and twinkling face gems, here’s Davy’s quick-and-dirty guide to festival makeup.
Prep and Set
Dewy skin is beautiful, but when it comes to fantasy makeup, Davy likes to keep it in check. “I don’t like to be greasy when I’m doing a makeup look, I love to control where that sheen and dewiness is going to be,” she says. To create a base, use an oil-free moisturizer, a layer of SPF, and a foundation that’s not too “moist-looking,” she instructs. The idea is matte, but not too matte–especially when setting your makeup at the end. “Anyone that knows me knows I’m not super big on powder, but for summer festival makeup I’d set with a little powder and a setting spray to enhance the long wear of your look and make your skin look like skin again.”

Go Graphic and Glittering
“It totally depends on the look you want, of course, but I think something that’s really fun to play with for a festival is color and experimenting with new placements on the eyes,” explains Davy. A long-wear eyeshadow like her ChromAddiction eye shadow and liner paints can be worn alone or layered on top of each other for more intense color and shimmer. You could also try an experimental, graphic liner design à la Euphoria, like dots, lines, or spikes (a favorite of Hunter Schafer’s character Jules). Either way, there’s room for adornment.

Adorn With Face Gems
According to Davy, the key to working with gems is using different sizes in a tapered fashion. “It looks fancier and more magical because you have different sized reflective bits that are refracting different kinds of light, so it’s more multidimensional,” she explains. “It just makes it look really polished and lovely—very pretty, very wearable gems as opposed to huge, chunky games all over your eyes.” Another way to add sparkle is by framing your brows, applying crystals above and below your arches. “For those with hooded eyes, I also like to put scattered tiny rhinestones in the space between your eyelid and your eyebrow. If you don’t have the space, try a rhinestones liner [along the upper lash line],” she says.
